This Victorian era classic still turns heads, in the garden or in the vase, as it trails its impossibly romantic maroon blooms. Plants grow 3-5’, with dangling flower ropes up to 18” long. An easy to grow summer annual recommended for coastal or moderate climates – in our experience, it is not as heat-tolerant as other amaranths.
Seeds are edible, but not produced in large enough quantities to be worthwhile eating. For high seed production - not to mention tall ornamental flower spikes - please see Copperhead Amaranth, Opopeo Amaranth, and Rio San Lorenzo in the Grains section.
