Milkweed is the centerpiece of Monarch butterfly recovery, as the only plant on which Monarchs lay their eggs. The caterpillars eat only Milkweed leaves, using toxic compounds in the plants to protect themselves from predation. Plants are perennial, dying to the ground over winter and emerging stronger every spring for many years. Drought-tolerant and deer-proof, and with those amazing flowers like tiny space stations. Flowers are present through most of the summer into fall, and attract bees and other pollinators.
Narrowleaf Milkweed is a native California variety, and is especially recommended for California gardeners.
Like most perennials, Milkweed grows into its full size by its second or third year, though it may flower in its first season. Seeds require cold stratification to germinate. You can let nature do it by planting seeds directly into the ground in the fall. If you're planting in the spring, you can refrigerate seeds for 2-4 weeks and then plant into flats or pots.
